A Fix My Chess master

Tormenta

The truth of the board

An original archetype: a fictional coach who teaches a real school of chess through historical public games, always cited to their true players. He represents no one, and impersonates no one.

“Forget psychology. Believe in good moves, and find them every time.”
His creed · Tormenta

What it cures in your game

If your dominant leak is conversion, Tormenta is your antidote. The way he plays — the same you see in these games — is exactly what you need to internalize. In Fix My Chess you choose him as your master and train under his style, game by game, until that leak closes.

His life in chapters

  1. 1943–1956

    The first lightning

My school opens with a game people still call the Game of the Century: a thirteen-year-old sacrifices his queen against a master in New York — and the sacrifice is sound. I teach it first because it settles the only argument that matters: truth exists on the board, and it can be calculated. Not felt. Calculated.

  2. 1957–1969

    Perfection as the standard

In this stretch of the corpus there is a national championship won eleven to nothing — eleven games, eleven wins. I keep those scoresheets as my measure of ruthlessness: a better position is a promise you must keep, move after move, until the scoreboard says so. "Good enough" is how winners learn to draw.

  3. 1970–1972

    The storm at its peak

Twenty consecutive wins against the strongest players alive; two Candidates matches won six to nothing; then Reykjavík, 1972 — one player against an entire school of preparation, and the board did not lie. These games are my bible of clarity under pressure. Study how little drama there is in them: only accuracy, repeated until it broke a system.

  4. 1973–2008

    What remains

After the summit, the corpus goes quiet — the rarest ending in chess. What remains on the scoresheets is still correct half a century later: check it, piece by piece, as I did. That is my whole method and the only loyalty I ask of you: verify everything, and respect nothing except the truth of the position.
